Jim was a dear friend to many who are mourning his passing and celebrating his life. Jim graduated from North Central College and Northern Illinois University with a Master's degree in Education. He taught secondary English and Drama in the Chicago suburbs and retired from Leyden High Schools in 2010. Tributes from his former students are a testament to the respect and affection they shared for their "Mr. Liesz." They shared a love for theatre and travel with many trips to New York for Broadway shows. Jim loved playing Bingo and cards with friends. Trips to casinos in Las Vegas and Wisconsin were a source of great enjoyment. Family pets, Molly and Maxine, were always amusing and deeply loved by Jim. Jim was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Glen Ellyn, where he served on the newcomers welcoming committee. Jim was a friend to everyone he met. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and a nephew, JT Liesz.
